Sacred Rocks 5 – Megalithic complex “Cherna Niva” (“Black Field”)

But let’s move consistently through the episode.

Following the route that Google maps offered us, we decided to stop at the partisan monument Flame, which is located on Peak Polovrak, on the road from Dupnitsa to Kyustendil. We had already passed the peak on our previous tours of the area, but we decided that this time we could spend some time there.

As mentioned in the video, this is a partisan monument, the construction of which destroyed the ancient Thracian sanctuary, once located on the peak. And the monument itself looks like a megalith – large and incomprehensible. That’s why I have included it in the video because it seemed to me that it was related to the series in some way.

After the “Flame” we continue in the direction of Kyustendil. The location of Cherna Niva is somewhere in the forest to the left of the road I am driving on. We find a convenient place to park the car and we walk back for a while because from the car I saw something like a path, climbing the nearby hill. Yes, there is a trail, but after about 100 meters it is lost among the dense bushes and single trees, which are densely overgrown with lichens and look very interesting – we name the place “The Enchanted Forest”. Even just for the photos, we manage to take, it’s worth coming here. We struggle through the bushes for about a kilometer and slowly climb up the hill, but at one point the vegetation becomes too dense and we give up. We decide that we will try to approach the place from the other side of the hill, from the village of Blato, because I remember looking at photos of the megalithic complex on the Internet, connected in some way as metadata with the village in question. In fact, when I looked at our tracks on the map (as you can see from the attached route below) we were very close to the place even the first time.

There are no signposts in the village of Blato, there is only one dirt road to the fields, but it seems to end in a private property, and there is no one to ask. After looking at the satellite version of Google maps, we decide that there is a visible enough dirt road through the fields, which will bring us pretty close to the location where Cherna Niva should be located.

So, we embark on the dusty dirt road through the field, the road goes up and down, and there are a lot of thorny bushes that scratch the car sideways and at the bottom but despite the terrible scraping noises, there is no serious damage to the paint on the doors. However, if you have a normal car, it may not be very wise to try to get as far as the place where we left the car and continued on foot. Especially if it has been raining and there is mud or snow!

There were cows grazing around the road, so at one point we were accompanied for about 300 meters by a rather large shepherd dog that barked and attacked the car too aggressively. So, if you are on foot or by bike, keep in mind the possibility of a dog encounter, because there are several farms along the way and apparently the animals go grazing during the day, guarded by dogs.

At one point, the dusty road just ended abruptly in a meadow and we had to stop the car here. Fortunately, the rocks of the complex were already visible on the opposite slope, so at least it became clear where we should go. After about 15 minutes of walking, descending the slope of a ravine overgrown with oak forest and back on the opposite climb, we reach the foot of the first rock group.

I will not go into detail about everything we saw, because it is reflected well enough in the video. The place is interesting, there are many traces of human activity on the rocks – ritual pits, rock engraved hemispheres, rock tunnels, finishing touches on the weathered rocks. On the map I am enclosing, I will try to identify the most interesting places so that if you decide to visit the place, you can find them more easily.
